No cleaners? No problem! Here are some home solutions for bathroom cleaning

Have a dirty sink with calcium around the faucet? Or how about a drain with a clog in the toilet? Is your shower head looking crusty? These can be simple fixes to clean, even when you’re out of household, multipurpose cleaners. With just a few common items from the kitchen, you can have a like new bathroom or kitchen without all of the harsh chemicals.

Cleaning the Sink: Baking soda and vinegar will be all that is needed. Plug up the sink and sprinkle the baking soda over the sink, concentrating mainly on hard to clean areas. Pour a small amount of vinegar and watch it fizz. Take a clean sponge and work the mixture into the surface. Rinse with cold water and a clean sink should be all that’s left.

Cleaning the Showerhead: Vinegar and baking soda will also be needed here, as well as a sturdy plastic bag large enough to fit around the showerhead and a rubber band. Mix one-third cup of the baking soda and one cup of vinegar in a bag. Make sure to do this over the sink as it will react. Secure the full bag over the showerhead with the rubber band. Leave the bag on the showerhead and, in the morning, wipe down the showerhead with water until the solution is gone and run the water for a few minutes.

Unclogging a Toilet: This method should clear out clogs caused by organic material. Heat a half gallon of water, but not to boiling. Extremely hot water can crack porcelain. Let it cool slightly while mixing a cup of baking soda and two cups of vinegar in the toilet bowl. Any type of vinegar will work, though distilled white vinegar tends to work best. Pour the water into the bowl at waist level then let the mixture stand overnight.

If the water does not flush on a second try in the morning, the clog may be from a hard obstruction. For any clogs that cannot be moved by chemicals, a snake may be required. If one is not readily available, or you aren’t able or comfortable removing the clog this way, don’t hesitate to reach out to Olympic Plumbing Technologies.
